Join us on September 19th as Robert Ancrum – Instrumentation, Control and SIS Consulting Engineer goes on a hunt for hidden Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) in your legacy process automation system.
When modernizing a programmable process control/automation system e.g. those based on Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) or even Direct Digital Control (DDC), particularly one that has been in service for some time (say 15+ years), have you considered compliance to current process safety standards like IEC 61511/ANSI S84?
“Protective functions” such process interlocks, emergency and process shutdowns that are implemented in the legacy system need to be accounted for and safety assessed in the new design. These functions may well reveal a “hidden” Safety Instrumented System (SIS) that was part of the legacy system, and now needs to be part of the new system.
Robert Ancrum graduated from Northumbria University in the UK with an honors degree in electronics and instrumentation. He completed his engineering in training requirements for the IEE (Now the EIT) with British Gas to become an IEE member and Chartered engineer. He is also a Professional Engineer of Ontario (Canada) and a functional safety engineer TUV Rheinland. Robert has over 30 years of I&C engineering experience with companies such as British Gas, Fluor Corporation, UOP, Ambitech, Citgo and BP. He currently works as an instrumentation, control and SIS consulting engineer in Chicago, Illinois.
