SUMMARY:September 2017 Technical Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Is There A Hidden SIS In Your Legacy Process Automation System?\nCheck Out Robert’s Presentation Here!\nJoin us on September 19th as Robert Ancrum – Instrumentation\, Control and SIS Consulting Engineer goes on a hunt for hidden Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) in your legacy process automation system.\nWhen modernizing a programmable process control/automation system e.g. those based on Distributed Control Systems (DCS)\, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) or even Direct Digital Control (DDC)\, particularly one that has been in service for some time (say 15+ years)\, have you considered compliance to current process safety standards like IEC 61511/ANSI S84?\n“Protective functions” such process interlocks\, emergency and process shutdowns that are implemented in the legacy system need to be accounted for and safety assessed in the new design. These functions may well reveal a “hidden” Safety Instrumented System (SIS) that was part of the legacy system\, and now needs to be part of the new system.\nRobert Ancrum graduated from Northumbria University in the UK with an honors degree in electronics and instrumentation.  He completed his engineering in training requirements for the IEE (Now the EIT) with British Gas to become an IEE member and Chartered engineer. He is also a Professional Engineer of Ontario (Canada) and a functional safety engineer TUV Rheinland.  Robert has over 30 years of I&C engineering experience with companies such as British Gas\, Fluor Corporation\, UOP\, Ambitech\, Citgo and BP. He currently works as an instrumentation\, control and SIS consulting engineer in Chicago\, Illinois.\nSocial Hour Sponsored By: Emerson Automation Solutions and Novaspect\nAttend this seminar and receive 1.0 Professional Development Hours (PDH)

SUMMARY:April 2017 Technical Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Process Safety: Why is the Instrument and Controls Engineer in the Spotlight?\nCheck out Kathy’s Presentation HERE.\nThere have been many well publicized process safety industry accidents around the world since the 1970s. These accidents have resulted in new regulations\, government bureaucracies\, standards\, books\, products\, and even training and qualification programs.  The process safety regulations in the US were promulgated in 1992 by OSHA\, and given a second push by EPA in 1994 under the risk management program.  March 23rd was the 12th anniversary of the BP Texas City Explosion.  That event in combination with the Deep Water Horizon Blowout and Explosion in April of 2010 challenged the status quo and  changed the business case for process safety.  The subsequent drive for risk-based process safety and agency emphasis on recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices (RAGAGEP) is driving investment in safety instrumented systems (ISA84)\, alarm management (ISA18.2) and cyber security (ISA99).  This presentation will bring to light why the ISA standards are carrying more weight and the role of the I&C engineer has expanded to have a voice in the plant\, at corporate and in the board room.\nKathy Shell is a business leader of a company of 150 professionals providing process safety consulting\, engineering\, automation and lifecycle software solutions.\nThe following are some of Kathy’s qualifications and achievements: \nBS.\, Chemical Engineering\, University of Akron\nRegistered Professional Chemical Engineer – Ohio\nAIChE: Member\, CCPS Technical Steering Committee Member\, Health and Safety Division Member\nGlobal Congress on Process Safety: Global Congress Co-Chair (2017)\, PPSS Chair (2016)\nTexas A&M Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center: Steering Team (2014 – present)\, Technical Advisory Committee (2002 – 2016)\, Symposium Committee and Track Chair (2002 to Present)\, Service Award Recipient (2008 and 2015)\nInternational Society of Automation Excellence in\nLeadership Award (2016) \nSocial Hour Sponsored By: Samson Controls\nAttend this seminar and receive 1.0 Professional Development Hours (PDH)\nPrint Here and Post by the Coffee Machine.

SUMMARY:May 2015 Technical Meeting
DESCRIPTION:I was told to comply with ISA 99 (ISA/IEC 62443)\, what is my first step?\nCheck out Bruce’s Presentation Here!\n\n  \nJoin us in May as we learn from Bruce Billedeaux – Maverick Technologies who will discuss the increasing concern about cyber security in the industrial control environment. Implementing cyber security program can be more than an additional non-value compliance activity\, it can be used to improve overall operations while reducing risk. \nAll modern process plants have many programs and activities that are not core to the production process which are never the less very important to the profitability of the company. These activities may include environmental management\, physical security and worker safety. The time and effort to maintain these programs effectively is considerable\, and the value\, while substantial\, is hard to objectively measure. \nCyber security should be viewed in the same light. A well-executed cyber security program will not only reduce risk but also add to the overall control system reliability and profitability. \nWe will discuss how existing programs can be leveraged to help meet some of the requirements and recommendations in ISA-62443 and explain that an effective cyber security program is less about technology than procedure and design. \nBruce Billedeaux is a Senior Consultant for Maverick Technologies. His design focus is on process optimization and wireless infrastructure. He is part of Maverick’s Operational Consulting (OPCON) cybersecurity team. He is a licensed professional engineer\, retired Coast Guard Reserve Officer\, and holds a BA of Economics from California State University\, Fullerton. \nSocial Hour Sponsored by: Maverick Technologies\nAttend this seminar and you can receive 1.0 Professional Development Hours (PDH) \nPrint Here and Post by the Coffee Machine.
