Years ago\, maintaining a performance specification of ±1% of span was difficult\, but today’s instrumentation can easily exceed that level on an annual basis. In some instances\, technicians are using old test equipment that does not meet new technology specifications. This paper focuses on establishing base line performance testing where analysis of testing parameters (mainly tolerances\, intervals and test point schemes) can be analyzed and adjusted to meet optimal performance. Risk considerations will also be discussed – regulatory\, safety\, quality\, efficiency\, downtime and other critical parameters. A good understanding of these variables will help in making the best decisions on how to calibrate plant instrumentation and how to improve outdated practices. \nNed has been promoting and developing best practices for calibration management for over 25 years. He contributed to “The Engineer’s Guide to Industrial Temperature Measurement”. Ned consults on calibration best practices and provides technical support to Beamex customers as well as the sales team in the United States. \nVirtual Event! \nWe will be hosting this meeting Virtually!  Details to join the meeting will be distributed to registered attendees the day before the meeting.  You must register to get a link to the event.  Note the presentation will start at 7:00 pm. \n[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code admin_label=”Code” _builder_version=”4.8.0″ _module_preset=”default”] \nRegister Now!Buy Tickets on Eventbrite \n\n \n[/et_pb_code][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

SUMMARY:May 2019 Technical Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Next Bhopal\nJoin us on May 21st as we hear from Paul Gruhn of aeSolutions. Paul will discuss how many of the precursors that led to the Bhopal disaster actually occur daily in minor forms throughout industry today. Preventing disasters — and the incidents of lesser consequence leading up to them — requires probing deeper beneath their seemingly superficial\, distracting\, and highly-visible exterior. Doing so shows how similar all industrial disasters actually are. Recognizing the patterns that led to the Bhopal disaster in many of the processes that we operate today indicates there is a weakness deserving our attention. This presentation will summarize fundamentals of a portion of the Bhopal plant’s process design\, changes that were made contrary to the original specifications\, problems encountered\, numerous design and operational changes that were made (with the best of intentions) that simply led to further problems\, and how these issues came together to cause the worst industrial disaster in history. Relating these events to issues commonly encountered in other facilities around the world today creates many parallels. This awareness is needed to prevent major industrial disasters and the more frequent “minor” process safety events that precede them today. \nPaul Gruhn is a Global Functional Safety Consultant with aeSolutions in Houston\, Texas. Paul is an ISA Life Fellow\, a 25+ year member and co-chair of the ISA 84 standard committee (on safety instrumented systems)\, the developer and instructor of ISA courses on safety systems\, the author of two ISA textbooks\, and the developer of the first commercial safety system software modeling program. Paul has a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology\, is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Texas\, a member of the Control Systems Engineering PE exam committee\, and both a Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE) and an ISA 84 Safety Instrumented Systems Expert. Paul is the 2019 ISA President. \nSponsor for Social Hour:  REOTEMP\nAttend this seminar and receive 1.0 Professional Development Hours (PDH) \nPrint Here and Post by the Coffee Machine\n\n \nPowered by Eventbrite

SUMMARY:April 2019 Technical Meeting - Flossmoor
DESCRIPTION:High-Performance HMI (ISA 101) Done Right\nJoin us in April as we learn from Lee Swindler of MAVERICK Technologies who will discuss what HP-HMI is about and how to implement it effectively.  This topic is being offered on two separate nights at different locations in the Chicago-land area.  You can attend on April 16th in Plainfield\, IL or April 17th in Flossmoor\, IL.  See below for additional details on the locations. \nAlthough High-Performance HMI (HP-HMI) concepts have been around for some time\, a lot more goes into creating an optimal HMI than you might think. Without an implementation process that facilitates operator engagement\, there is a risk the new graphics will not be effective or even suffer outright rejection.  In this presentation\, we’ll examine how effective graphics development results in an HMI that achieves enthusiastic operator buy-in and makes it possible to proactively identify plant problems and respond to them faster. \nLee Swindler is a Program Manager with MAVERICK Technologies.  Lee has 30 years of automation industry experience including 21 years in manufacturing (Amoco\, LyondellBasell) and 9 years on the engineering services side.  Lee graduated in 1988 with a BSEE degree from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. \nTopics to be covered: \n\nOverview of HP-HMI\nProven advantages of HP-HMI\nHow to implement for maximum benefit\n\nSponsor for Social Hour:  ISA\, Will-DuPage\nAttend this seminar and receive 1.0 Professional Development Hours (PDH) \nPrint Here and Post by the Coffee Machine\n\n \nPowered by Eventbrite

SUMMARY:September 2017 Technical Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Is There A Hidden SIS In Your Legacy Process Automation System?\nCheck Out Robert’s Presentation Here!\nJoin us on September 19th as Robert Ancrum – Instrumentation\, Control and SIS Consulting Engineer goes on a hunt for hidden Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) in your legacy process automation system.\nWhen modernizing a programmable process control/automation system e.g. those based on Distributed Control Systems (DCS)\, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) or even Direct Digital Control (DDC)\, particularly one that has been in service for some time (say 15+ years)\, have you considered compliance to current process safety standards like IEC 61511/ANSI S84?\n“Protective functions” such process interlocks\, emergency and process shutdowns that are implemented in the legacy system need to be accounted for and safety assessed in the new design. These functions may well reveal a “hidden” Safety Instrumented System (SIS) that was part of the legacy system\, and now needs to be part of the new system.\nRobert Ancrum graduated from Northumbria University in the UK with an honors degree in electronics and instrumentation.  He completed his engineering in training requirements for the IEE (Now the EIT) with British Gas to become an IEE member and Chartered engineer. He is also a Professional Engineer of Ontario (Canada) and a functional safety engineer TUV Rheinland.  Robert has over 30 years of I&C engineering experience with companies such as British Gas\, Fluor Corporation\, UOP\, Ambitech\, Citgo and BP. He currently works as an instrumentation\, control and SIS consulting engineer in Chicago\, Illinois.\nSocial Hour Sponsored By: Emerson Automation Solutions and Novaspect\nAttend this seminar and receive 1.0 Professional Development Hours (PDH)
